Nothing new under the sun.

Nothing new under the sun.

“All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.”

‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭1:8-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

I’ve heard it said that the Bible is God’s owner manual of creation. The Bible is timeless. The Bible is more than insightful, it is perfect and true. God knows fallen man. When he told us what to do and what not to do, it was for our benefit and His glory. Natural man today responds to sin the same way he and she always did. Tattoo was offensive to God then, it remains offensive to God today, and it will continue to be offensive in the future. The Bible says so.

In Lev 19:28, God told his beloved people not to tattoo themselves. “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.”

Leviticus 19:28 ESV

Ever wonder why anyone tattoos themself? Why does it matter to God? God condemned the process not what it looked like. I’ve spoken to a lot of people about tattooing. Most people say that the prohibition only applied to the time it was originally written. It was done to honor their gods. It was done to show ownership.

It is idolatry, disobedience, vanity. It was when Lev 19 was written. It is today. The fact that 20%+ of people do it, does not justify it. The fact that some who claim to follow Christ do it, doesn’t justify it. It does suggest that they are a goat/ tare.

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.””

1 Corinthians 3:16-20 ESV

Those who get tattoos, deny their salvation, by doing do. Those who got tattoos before being saved will be ashamed. The indwelling Holy Spirit will call sin, sin.

There is only one God, in 3 persons. The One God told His creation NOT TO TATTOO THEMSELVES. The One God told His creation to be Holy as He is Holy. The One God commanded, “And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.””

Matthew 22:37-40 ESV

If you do not have a tattoo but condone the practice, congratulations, you broke both the first and second great Commandments!

You do not honor God by disobeying him. Church bodies that justify Tattooing, are not in Christ, or can be. They are corrupt and worldly. Bad company corrupts good character!

“For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”

Luke 9:25 ESV

Tithes by heathen do not justify sin. It reveals your greed!

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

1 John 3:1 ESV

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV

All sin is forgivable, but only after repentance. There is a big difference between God’s standard of sin and our obedience to God perfect standard. We are justified once we receive God’s Holy Spirit, Jesus became Our Lord, and thereby we accept God’s standard of Good and evil, Godliness and sin, salt and light. We are sanctified by being given eyes to see the sin that remains and the desire to repent of it.

A pastor replies….

“One postal clerk had a tattoo on his forearm that was the image of a flowering vine.  Each flower on the vine was a reminder of his children and grandchildren.”

Prideful tattoo.  A picture locket of his children and grandchildren would have been great. I wonder how many of them sinned, following his bad example.

“”You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

Exodus 20:4-6 ESV

“Another person had what looked like a friendship bracelet tattooed around his wrist.  It was in two colors, yellow and green.  On the top of the wrist were three small crosses.  On the underside of the wrist was the word, “Resurrection.”  The individual lived among, was in public school with a lot of careless sinners.  He tried to avoid their company, but realize that he wanted a constant reminder of what Jesus had done for him.  So he had that “friendship bracelet” tattooed around his wrist.”

Bad company corrupts good character.

You do not share in God’s resurrection by disobeying God! He could have worn a shirt or a real bracelet.   “But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.””

Matthew 22:29-32 ESV

“A third example is a man who served as a strength and conditioning coach.  He told me about the mirrors that surrounded the gym in which he trained athletes.  They not only helped to see whether a particular muscle group was developing properly or whether a given exercise was being done properly, but also could drive the ego the focus on “idolatry” of the body.  So he had a crucifix tattooed over his heart, not only as a reminder to him about who he should worship first and foremost, but also as a witness to the athletes he was training.”

You do not fight idolatry by displaying idolatry. He should have covered his body if it caused him to sin. If he truly loved God, he would have obeyed God and not tattooed himself.

“A fourth example is the couple who elected to have images of wedding rings engraved on their ring fingers, especially after one kept losing his ring.”

The church is God’s Bride. A wedding ring is a reminder. A tattoo is adulterous.

There are no Godly reasons to tattoo yourself. Why do pastors question God’s Word if only Given once? God said No. That should be enough motivation to stay pure.
