The Christian Litmus Tests 0414

The Christian Litmus Tests

Do you remember your high school chemistry class? You could test the acidity of something with litmus paper. It would change color in the presence of an acid or a different color for a base.

If your life depended on it, would you trust the label on an open bottle, or would you take the litmus test ?

What makes a christian?

Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover or a liquid by its bottle label. But only if the outside is consistent with the inside.

What do christians look like? As you look at the people who claim to be christian, what do we see? Its a spectrum from extreme paganism on one end to extreme holiness on the other. How many tattoos can a christian biblically have? Sadly, Most pastors are silent on the matter.

The bible isn’t !

Do you listen to men or do you listen to God? When they disagree, you must deny one or the other. Most people presume that someone who claims to be christian, is. Empirically speaking, most are mistaken.

God’s word is our christian litmus test.

So what does God say? He tells us what we are like. He tells us how we are different.

Lets first look into the Bible. Then lets listen to an audio about this issue.

The Love Test

Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34, 35 NKJV)

“If you love Me, keep My commandments. the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:15, 17, 18 NKJV)

The Obedience Test

Today you have proclaimed the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and that you will obey His voice. (Deuteronomy 26:17 NKJV )
And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!” (Joshua 24:24 NKJV)
I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:19-23 NKJV)p

The Holiness Test

“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. (Leviticus 19:2 NKJV)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. (John 12:25, 26 NKJV)

The Fear Test

Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. (Colossians 3:22-25 NKJV)

For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. (I Peter 2:21, 22, 25 NKJV)

“Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. (Acts 13:26 NKJV)

Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth— to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” (Revelation 14:6, 7 NKJV)

The Pagan Test

Pagan is as Pagan Does.

Where must godly Christian teachers find truth? From the Bible? From their seminary? From other popular teachers? From their local congregations? From Society? What if the truth each proclaim is different?
Many will claim Biblical authority in doctrine, but in practice will follow worldly influences. Love of God comes first. If you love God, you will obey and fear him. Most “Christians” elevate “love of neighbor and self” above love of God. By so doing, they fail to Love as God directs. Condoning or normalizing sinfulness isn’t love. Those truly saved will love, fear, and obey God, and lead others to do likewise.

The unsaved are condemned already. They need to hear God’s word and be saved from condemnation. This requires action by God, grace. God must regenerate our dead spirit. This regenerated spirit will lead sinful man to repentance. This repentance leads to salvation in 3 forms ( justification, sanctification, and glorification).

In Justification, God accepts Jesus’ sacrifice on the behalf of the elect as full propitiation of our sinfulness , past, present, and future. When God looks at us, He see’s the blood of Christ and His righteousness. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit – forever. We are a new creature in Christ. Our fallen will is restored.

I was baptized and attended church for over 20 years before God saved me. When He did, my will changed. I hated my sinfulness and prayed for God to save me from it. I was led by the Holy Spirit to read the Bible. He shined righteous light into my soul and revealed my sinfulness. Sinful things I use to love, I now hate.

Sanctification, is our life long walk with God. We reconcile our accounts. We identify the sin in our life, repent, and leave it behind. We work out salvation with fear and trembling, knowing God’s perfect standard of righteousness and our inability to grasp it. But our reach will always exceed our grasp, and we become more godly with each sin repented and each lesson learned. The desire of our heart is to be holy as God is Holy. This can only be done by leaving the worldliness behind and humbly accepting our slavery to righteousness. Being righteous is hard (impossible) but we accept God’s judgements on all things and seek to obey them,
first with fear and trembling of the consequences, but in time, in loving gratitude that godly wisdom provides. Disobeying God grieves us. Humble obedience to God gives us joyful satisfaction.

Glorification is the totsl fulfillment of God’s promise to perfectly complete our sanctification when He separates us from our sinful body when he calls us home to heaven. At that moment and through eternity, we will be sinless and with God.

The false teachers would have us believe that either we have to work to earn our salvation or that we can be saved without any change in our fallen will. The first denies the sufficiency of God’s power in salvation. The later denies the effectiveness of God’s power in salvation. Both deny God’s promises and doctrine.

Christians seek Holiness and righteousness.
Pagans don’t.

Pagan is as pagan does.
Holy does as holy is.

Here is an audio on the cultural changes occurring in our world and sadly in the visible churches that claim to be Christian.

Don’t accept the lie that a true christian can love God and love the ungodly practices and attitudes of the world.

“But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.” (Matthew 13:25 KJV)

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. “(James 4:4 KJV)

Spiritual adultery describes some one who claims to be faithful to one but acts unfaithfully.

Either you follow God or you deny God by following the ungodly world.

Being a true christian is more like a pregnancy test. Either Jesus is your Lord or the world is.

If you like tattoos, pagan practices, accept homosexuality, permit abortions, and the rest of the list found in Romans 1, 1 corinthians 6, or psalms 1, you aren ‘t yet saved. The saved have the holy spirit to guide us and rebuke us.

Here is the christian litmus test:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. “(Romans 1:18-32 NKJV)

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. ” (I Corinthians 6:9-11 NKJV)

“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.” (Psalms 1:1-6 NKJV)
