Vainly Puffed Up by His Fleshly Mind

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (II Timothy 4:3, 4 NKJV)

“These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.” (Colossians 2:23 NKJV)

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.” (Romans 1:28-32 NKJV)

This is the warnings overlooked by Jefferson Bethke, a disciple of the Seattle grunge based Mars Hill Church of Mark Driscoll. In the culture war, they proclaim that you can be as worldly as you want, just claim Jesus and He will ignore your worldly passions. This is a man made religion, as odious or worse, as the religious institutions and the godly that they vilify. After receiving the video link by a young Christian, I watched it and googled it. What follows is my reply to this arrogant false prophet, including commentary from various google sources. My comments are in [ ]s, Bethke’s are followed by jb. The Bible quotes are also referenced. The remaining ” “, are from google.

Jefferson Bethke, “A young online evangelist, is hoping to epitomize the message that Jesus does not equal “religion” in a YouTube video that has attracted over 6 million views and incited hundreds of comments on the true meaning of faith.”

The video, titled “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus,” was uploaded Jan. 10 and has since become YouTube’s most-watched video. The popular, and apparently controversial video, showcases what Jefferson Bethke says was his “journey to discover this truth – the difference between Jesus and false religion.”

“What if I told you, Jesus came to abolish religion?” the poet asks. “If religion is so great, why has it started so many wars? Why does it build huge churches, but fails to feed the poor?”jb

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to KEEP ONESELF UNSPOTTED from the world.” (James 1:22, 27 NKJV)

[Jesus did not come to abolish religion. Pure and undefiled Religion has not started “so many wars”. Wars have been started by men, with and without biblical Justification. God told Israel to war against those in the promised land, to be God’s agent of judgement. God judged Sodom and Gomorrah for being wickedly worldly.

I doubt that God built many of the huge churches (including Mars Hill and all the others that follow doctrines of men and deny the Doctrines of God). So God’s church’s primary or sole purpose is to feed the poor? It sounds Biblical, but is it? Show me where the bible says that!]

“And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” (I Corinthians 13:3 NKJV)

[Love of God as demonstrated by our obedience to Him, and Love of neighbor by sharing the true Gospel with them and caring for both their physical and spiritual needs, as God directs. There are many people who feed the poor only to lead them away from God (ie all the non-Christian religions and unbiblical cults that claim to be Christian).]

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’ ” (Matthew 19:21 NKJV)

“For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.” (Mark 14:7 NKJV)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. “(Matthew 28:19, 20 NKJV)

[Although feeding the poor is good, that is of lower priority to God, than sharing the true Gospel to the lost, and teaching obedience to the disciples of God.]

“Religion says slave, Jesus says son,” he adds. “Religion puts you in shackles but Jesus sets you free. Religion makes you blind, but Jesus lets you see.”jb

[God’s word says everyone is born slave to sin and the redeemed are freed from this slavery and become slaves of righteousness with God’s law written on our hearts! Spiritually we are adopted sons of God. Redemption gives us eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to hold spiritual truth. Apparently, jb is blind to spiritual things and cannot understand that those who love the world lacks the love of God].

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (I John 2:15 NKJV)

“Not unlike many Christians, Bethke says he spent his whole life “building this facade of neatness,” acting like a church kid yet getting faded and viewing pornography. He accuses many Christians of also putting on a “fake look.””

[The critical problem of many of those who attend church is that they aren’t saved but are raised to obey God, although they don’t want to and only pretend that they do. If He was truly saved and loved Jesus, he would hate worldliness and sin, instead of justifying both. ]

“The problem with religion is it never gets to the core,” the poet asserts. “It’s just behavior modification like a long list of chores – like let’s dress up the outside, make it look nice and neat.”jb

[ It’s a chore to have to do something you don’t enjoy. It’s no burden to do what you enjoy, and the truly saved enjoy following Christ and honoring God’s will, law, or standard! The fact that his video attracts over 6 million people demonstrates that the worldly seek affirmation in following the wide road to judgement, rather the narrow path to righteousness.]

Church, he says, “is not a museum for good people; it’s a hospital for the broken which means I don’t have to hide my failure, I don’t have to hide my sin because it doesn’t depend on me, it depends on Him.”

[The Biblical church is the redeemed, who act good, because they are good, reborn in Christ and honor Christ, as His faithful Bride does. They are holy, not because they worked at it but because God remade them and keeps them holy. Church isn’t a hospital for broken, but those redeemed from a broken past. We repent of our failures, and sin no more. The redeemed don’t hide their sin but confess it, so that God can forgive it and remove it, as He promises to do. The redeemed do not walk in sin, do not justify sin, do not feed the poor, just so that they can be forgiven or justified, but obey God because they Love God and truly seek to honor Him. ]

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. (Matthew 7:21 NKJV)

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” (Luke 6:46-49 NKJV)

[Jesus is the Rock upon whom our foundation is secure]

Bethke, a self-described “messed up dude addicted to grace,” claims that Christianity is God’s search for man, while religion is the opposite – man’s search for God. He explains that this is why salvation is free for the taking – forgiveness is his and not something based on “effort, but Christ’s obedience alone.”

[ Grace is the unmerited favor of God. It is NOT license to sin. Our election is by Grace and it is not universal. The elect will follow and obey God because God saves, redeems, and changes them to desire holiness and hate worldliness. True Christianity is not God’s search for man nor man’s search for God. It is the inescapable result of God’s plan of salvation for those elect toward whom He chooses to show mercy. Salvation isn’t free and comes with a cost. Jesus paid for the elect’s sin with His blood and for everyone He died for, He becomes their Lord. Those saved are a new creature in Christ, desiring to obey God, not to be saved, but because we have already been saved!]

“So I know I hate religion, in fact I literally resent it,” he states. “Because when Jesus cried it is finished, I believe He meant it.”jb

[The Bible doesn’t condemn all religion, just the impure and defiled kind. Although JB wouldn’t say it, His Mars Hill Church is one such impure and defiled religion. They deny the spoken will of God which condemns tattooing as being unholy and defiled, by normalizing and condoning the defilement of those who claim to be Christian.
For a detailed case against tattooing, check out these posting:

Jesus cried it is finished, for the elect He came and died for. He never intended the JBs of the world to misapply His sacrifice for those that won’t and can’t benefit from it.]

“Bethke clarifies that he loves the church and the Bible but he wants to expose the hypocrisy and legalism apparent in many houses of worship.”

[The truly redeemed church freely admit their former sin, and repent of the sin that remains. The hypocrisy is to say one thing and do another. Christians repent and seek to sin no more. The JBs of the world ignore parts of the Bible and lead others to do likewise, unapologetically! The Bible call such people as false teachers, false prophets, and tares (counterfeit Christian).

Legalism is what the Pharisees did. They added to and changed God’s standard. Jesus condemned them for it. Jesus never led anyone to disobey God, but to the contrary, condemned those who did as being lawless. It is not legalism to defend God’s standard (law).]

“He wrote on his Facebook on Friday, “If you are using my video to bash ‘the church’ be careful. I was in no way intending to do that.” ”

“The Church is Jesus’ bride so be careful how you speak of His wife,” he stated. “If a normal dude has right to get pissed when you bash His wife, it makes me tremble to think how great the weight is when we do it to Jesus’ wife. The church is His vehicle to reach a lost word (sic). A hospital for sinners. Saying you love Jesus but hate the Church, is like a fiancé saying he loves his future bride, but hates her kids. We are all under grace. Look to Him.”

[Listen to his offensive language. JB is bashing The bride of Christ when He inaccurately calls them legalistic when all they are doing is honoring God’s judgements. The Church is the spiritual body of Christ, obeying the will of Christ. Part of that will is the great commandment and commission. It isn’t a hospital for sinners. It is the sheep pen for those who know the Good shepherd’s voice and follow Him. I find it insulting to call the worldly who fear not The Lord, Christian. That is blasphemy!

The world is full of people who claim to speak for God, but deny what the Bible clearly says. While it is true that we were born sinners and that although justified and sanctified by Christ, even the redeemed remain imperfect. The love of God and the fear of God are 2 sides of the same coin. It’s one thing to hold to God’s standard and another to honor it. The false teachers of today’s world do neither and fearlessly claim that God no longer requires our doing so. The true (invisible) church and body of Christ collectively holds and honors God’s standard by discipling and disciplining the visible church. A church body that ignores all of God’s standard, refuses God’s will, and fears not God’s wrath for the unredeemed, will have there lamp stand removed and be judged.]

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. “(Revelation 2:5 NKJV)

In closing, the emerging church movement that JB and Driscoll are in, denies scripture and creates a post modern doctrine that can be whatever a person wants to make it. God exists, His word reveals Him, and judgement will happen. Listening to false teachers is dangerous and has eternal consequences.

Trust only the Bible and run from anyone who denies its authority.

In Christ,
