Are You in Christian Limbo? 0513

Are you in Christian Limbo?

Yesterday, I heard a Christian radio program. A caller said he was born again in 1969 but had fallen away over the years into drunkenness and other worldliness. He suffers incredible guilt and frustration. The experts never once considered the possibility that he lost his salvation or was never saved. Their solution was to not feel guilty but to trust in Jesus. WRONG!

I think there are many in this Christian limbo struggling in between being declared saved by evangelists or pastors and remaining sinful in the world. Many are told or led to believe that there is no cost to salvation, that they can be in Christ and of the world. Only God can confirm salvation.

The Catholics have purgatory and the protestants have this limbo. The dictionary defines it as the place where the “unbaptized infants or righteous who die before the coming of Christ Go when they die”. Though no such place physically exists, the concept modified by me, aptly describes this common condition.

The Bible clearly teaches that everyone who dies outside of Christ, gets justice served in an eternal exile from God called, among other things, Hell. There can be no u-turns after death. Prior to that point, all may be saved. But only the elect can and will be saved. God doesn’t share with us this list of who He elects, however. This doesn’t mean that we can’t know that we are saved. You can tell by your fruit. Fruit isn’t works that you do. Fruit is what you are, whose you are, and who’s your daddy (spiritually speaking)!

So lets look at limbo man who called into this radio show, and consider his assumptions, his lifestyle, his current guilt and his present condition. Next lets prescribe a possible solution. Ultimately, he is God’s hands , as we all are. Some receive justice, the elect receive mercy.

His Assumption
He was saved in 1969. Some who say the sinner’s prayer do so because God has regenerated their dead spirit and led them to repentance. Most, however, are told that Jesus loves them and if they complete this work called the sinners prayer, THEY WILL BE SAVED!?. No true repentance because no spiritual regeneration by God. These guys belong to the “god” of this world -Satan and this offer of free fire insurance was too good an offer to refuse. They can have the world and get heaven when they die. Party on with Satan and Jesus!
I don’t know if limbo man was saved in 1969, but the evidence isn’t in his favor!

His Lifestyle
He’s says he knows what the Bible says, but the world is too attractive to give up. He is in pain. He knows that he doesn’t want what God wants, so he vacillates between being good and being guilty. He is in good company. Paul describes our condition well in Romans 7.

“For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7: 14, 15, 17-19, 24 NKJV)

There is a war going on within each of us. The longer and closer we walk with Jesus, the easier it gets . The old man verses the new man. The carnal man verses the spiritual man. This war exists for those who only think they are saved and for those who are saved. For those who know they aren’t, there is no conflict, just indifference or contempt for God’s will, His word.

The truly saved win this battle because they rely on God, his promised, his standard to fight this fight. They obey God and daily put on the armor of God.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

1) know truth

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth,”

2) be a slave of righteousness

“having put on the breastplate of righteousness”,

3) be involved in God’s business

“and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;”

4) trust God

“above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”

5) know that you are saved and act appropriately!

“And take the helmet of salvation, and ”

6) use God’s word to do what you should

“the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; ”

7) talk to God, confess your sin and pray for guidance, power, and protection.

“praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” (Ephesians 6:10-20 NKJV)

This is possible only if you are committed to God.

Salvation gives us the will of God and faith in God. We win because the Holy Spirit guides us to follow Christ. We may be tempted to drink, but He reminds us what happens when we did, so we don’t. The world tempts us to violate god’s will, but we won’t yield because we love God more that anything.
Over time, we no longer want to sin. God saves us by separating us from our sin. He shatters the illusion that we are what we like and sin is what we like. Our love for God grows as our love of sin wanes. This is why God hates sin. Salvation frees us from our slavery to sin, and we follow Christ.

His current condition.
Guilt is like pain. No one likes it. But God created us with a conscience to avoid evil, just like pain makes us avoid damaging ourselves. It is spiritual feedback as pain is physical feedback. So guilt is good for us if it leads us to repent. Having guilt also means that we know we are violating God’s will. No need to carry guilt around. Just repent and leave the sin at the cross. Repent and sin no more. Limbo man must get busy living or get busy dying. GET OFF THE FENCE! You must choose either righteousness or worldliness. The wages of sin is death.

The solution:
If you can’t leave worldliness behind, remove yourself from situations that lead you to sin. Read through the new testament, prayerfully. Avoid worldly people and seek godly ones. Its amazing how much easier it is to resist temptation if you avoid situations that you find tempting.

The best way to stay on a diet is to avoid fattening places. You really don’t need that gallon of rocky road in your freezer. Throw away porn. Don ‘t go to happy hour. God will give you an avenue of escape from your temptations. Take it!

Finally, be real! If you don ‘t feel too redeemed, consider the possibility that you haven’t been saved. Speaking from experience, i thought i was saved long before i was. When your desires miraculously have changed from sin to God, you may have been saved. When you hunger to know and understand God’s word and obey it, you may have been saved. When the sin you use to desire now offends you, you may have been saved. When you understand the difference between joy and happiness, and seek joy, you may have been saved! When you only seek to glorify God and humble yourself, you may have been saved.
If all of these are present, you probably have been saved

Salvation is a miracle. If your’s wasn’t preceded by a growing knowledge of your sinfulness and followed by a significant change in your desires, work out your salvation with FEAR AND TREMBLING! If you do not fear God, you aren’t saved.

Get busy living or get busy dying!

In Jesus name,
