What is Love? 0413

What is love?

Most believe it is an emotion invoked when you buy your wife chocolates, your mom flowers, or your daughter a new dress. Give them what they want and they love you. Withhold what they desire, and they will feel that you don’t love them, or put another way, You hate them, or just don’t care for them. Sensual, physical, and external.

Others believe it is putting the object of your love first, before others and yourself. It is giving others what is good for them and keeping from them, those things that hurt them or may hurt them. Care, spiritual, and internal.

What does God say?

1 Corinthian 13 is called the love chapter. Let’s take a look.

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.”

Love isn’t talk.
Love isn’t just an emotion.
Love is an ethic.

“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

Love isn’t knowledge or just faith in anything or everything.
Love is Godliness.

“And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.”

Charity isn’t necessarily love. Welfare that shatters family and demotivated personal responsibility isn’t love.
Pointless sacrifice isn’t either.

“Love suffers long and is kind;”

Love is patient – nice – good – gentle – amiable – benign

” love does not envy;”

Love isn’t greedy, lustful, sinful

“love does not parade itself, is not puffed up”

Love isn’t proud or arrogant

“does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;”

Love isn’t rude, selfish, thin skinned, sinister

” does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth”

Love is righteous, Godly

“bears all things”

Love has broad shoulders

“believes all things,”

Love is gullible? No, believes God, the Bible.

“hopes all things,”

Love is unrealistic? no, faith and hope strengthen by knowledge of God’s omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence!

“endures all things.”

Love is tough!

“Love never fails.”

Love is superman? No, love is godliness and God never fails.

“But whether there are prophecies, they will fail;”

All Prophecies aren’t from God , but those that are, are true and won’t fail.

“whether there are tongues, they will cease”

Language is temporary, time for salvation is limited.

“whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away”

Knowledge is fickle? So-called flawed science passes off lies for truth. Real truth lasts for ever and isn’t subjective.

“For we know in part and we prophesy in part.”

Nobody’s perfect. But the Bible is trustworthy and wholly true. Study and apply it to be, godly, holy!

“But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.”

God will end us! He will sanctify and glorify His people. He is eager to save!

“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child;”

So true

” but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

Sadly, Many don’t!

“For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.”

Cataracts? No. We see through eyes tainted by sin. In salvation, our eyes and ears are opened and cleaned!

“Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.”

Facebook! No. Sanctification leads to Glorification! Know God and the Bible. Being known by God means being His elect that He has saved. Those who will not hear Go, God will say “go away, I never knew you!”

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”(I Corinthians 13:1-13 NKJV)

The love that this chapter describes isn’t emotion. It isn’t sexual. Substitute “Godly Care and Concern” for “Love” and your close to the accurate meaning.

I’ve looked into the Bible to try to understand what it says love is and isn’t. I was surprised to discover that Gen 22 was the first time the word “love” appeared in the Bible when God said that Abraham loved Isaac and sent them to sacrifice Isaac.
This of course points forward to the cross. God the father loves Jesus in a parallel way. But. True love is selfless, caring, and obedient.

The next use of the word “love” that involves God is in Exodus 20.

“you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Exodus 20:5, 6 NKJV)

INIQUITY, n. L. iniquitas; in and oequitas, equity.

1. Injustice; unrighteousness; a deviation from rectitude; as the iniquity of war; the iniquity of the slave trade.

2. Want of rectitude in principle; as a malicious prosecution originating in the iniquity of the author.

3. A particular deviation from rectitude; a sin or crime; wickedness; any act of injustice.

Your iniquities have separated between you and your God. Is.59.

4. Original want of holiness or depravity.

I was shapen in iniquity. Ps.51.

As he promises `keeping mercy for thousands, but not always pardoning the guilty’ (Exodus 34:7)

Nahum 1:3 “The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked.” God is merciful but he is also just and fair and must punish sin”

God equates love of God with obedience to God. To the worldly, obey is a four letter word. Revealing and Resisting sinfulness is deemed hateful. But in God’s view, obedience is loving, caring, healthy. The world demands the normalization of homosexuality, promiscuity, and debased pleasure. God and Bible teach that those who do such things will not see the kingdom of heaven.

So, what is love?

You wont find it in a box of chocolates or homosexual “marriage”, or tolerance of unrighteousness.

Love is sharing the truth. The Gospel is the truth. For the elect, Truth leads to repentance, and that leads to salvation. Those who reject the truth are deceived. Human traditions and unbiblical religion can be strongly deceptive and eternally harmful. Love risks offense at times to challenge unGodliness and false teaching. They know not what they do. Many who have become saved through the graceful persistence of a loving believer, acknowledge the value of this kind of love.

A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. (Proverbs 17:17 NKJV)

He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just, Both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord. (Proverbs 17:15 NKJV)

Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. (Proverbs 27:6 NKJV)

Agape love is unconditional love. It means that you love others because it is God’s will for us to do so, not because we are first loved. While we were yet sinners, Jesus died for the elect. If you love God, you will obey him and love everybody, including your enemies. You love by giving them what they need. If what they want is harmful to them, you don’t give them what they want. This is what the Bible says is true love.

Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, give the homeless a place to live, and help the blind see , not just physically, but also spiritually, which will last through eternity! Let them see your love for them, by showing your unconditional devotion to God and God’s love.

Everyone knows John 3:16:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 NKJV)

Most don’t know the context of John 3:16, and the verses that follow it!

But know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! It doesn’t say He loves everyone and saves everyone. His love isn’t tolerance of sin. His love removes sin. He doesn’t have to condemn anyone, since they are already condemned. He lovingly saves some, regenerates our dead spirit, helps us see our sinfulness, and for the penitent, removes our sin by paying for their our transgressions with Jesus’s blood. God loves His elect and gives us what we need, and removes from us the sin that hurts us and our relationship with Him.

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.’He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.’ ” (John 3:17-21 NKJV)

In Jesus’ name!
